I watched Idiocracy for the second time over the weekend. I don’t even like it that much! But the way that Fox buried the movie after Mike Judge tore into several corporations, including Fox, has always fascinated me.
Why did Judge do this? After all, the main plot involved a fake sports drink known for having electrolytes. Obviously, this was Gatorade. Judge could have done the same for Starbucks, Costco, and Fuddruckers, but he didn’t. I have no idea why, because who really cares about Starbucks? Every joke about them being a soul-sucking corporation had already been made… to make them as a coffee shop/handjob factory? Well, ummmm…. okay.
Instead, Idiocracy has become that movie that some people reference when they’re looking for something other than 1984 to describe the 21st century political climate, and it’s a shame, because it’s not Orwell. In spite of some very funny moments, it’ll never be at that level. Maybe someone out there will credit Judge with having the balls to go right at certain brands, but it was lazy writing. He could have done more with fictional entities. It was a gutsy move in the short term that failed when it came to actually releasing the movie.
Also, the picture above reminded me of Wall-E, basically the same scene. WON’T SOMEONE THINK OF THE ENVIRONMENT?!??!?
