I dont watch this show all the time but I did happen to see this episode. I completely identified with Lizzy Caplan’s character, Julia. While I was watching the episode I could see the parallels they were drawing with the manic pixie dream girl controversy and in my head I was screaming CLEVER CLEVER CLEVER!
The thing is, Jess makes a lot of sense. The bottom line is “I am who I am and I’m proud of it. Why should I change who I am to conform to your image of what a grown woman should act like.” And I agree. Feminism is about choice, even if that choice means a more traditional or a more conservative way of life.
For me personally, its not the Jess’ of the world that annoy me. Its the idea of men embracing that as an ideal. Not because those women aren’t awesome, but because those women are the archetype, at the surface at least, of a less threatening member of the opposite sex.

I agree. I’m not sure how much that Boner Party ideal exists anymore (isn’t Boner Party gone?), and I can’t keep track of that stuff, but at least in my corner of the internet, most of the anger lately has been directed towards Zooey herself instead of the guys who create this aura around her, so it was nice to see someone defending her. Plus, New Girl got shit on early, and it’s not that bad of a show! I’m glad people are watching something they like instead of complaining about Whitney for the 400th time.
On a separate note, I can’t entirely blame Zooey for going this route, taking control of this branding, and I think she’s smarter than a lot of people give her credit for. You can’t get a foothold in music, TV, movies, the internet, and advertising without knowing what you’re doing. She’s in a very good position right now.
(BTW, that Julie Klausner article is definitely worth revisiting.)
