NEW ORLEANS THINGS
Got a list request about my favorite eats in New Orleans, so I’ll oblige and also invite others to chime in. Talk about your favorite places!
Domilise’s - I ADORED this place. It’s like all the best neighborhood moms got together and opened up a sandwich shop. Got the oyster po’boy here and it was life-changing.
Acme Oyster House - You go there and sit at the bar and watch some dudes shuck oysters, then you eat the oysters.
Saturn Bar - Legit dive bar in Ninth Ward. There are two definitions of a dive bar: there’s regular bars that people on Yelp call dive bars because they look divey, and then there are actual dive bars that people on Yelp are scared of. This is the latter. I think they were having an ongoing garage sale in the back room when I was there.
Gumbo Shoppe - Self-explanatory.
Cooter Brown’s - I came for the huge selection of beer but they also have really good food. Regretfully did not eat the alligator sausage. Sports bar stuff.
Camellia Grill - BURGERS AND SHAKES, SHAKES AND BURGERS
Chelsea’s - I’m cheating because this is in Baton Rouge but it’s worth a trip just because I love that it’s underneath Interstate 10. We got a lot of food there and I don’t remember much aside from the fried green tomatoes but I DO remember that it was all delicious.
Former NOLA resident and resident diatom guru Billy Dalto recently mentioned this burger joint called Company Burger that caught my eye and I’d go there. I also did not go to Central Grocery for muffalettas because I didn’t have time but I’ve heard good things. I really only scratched the surface in my week there.
New Orleans is one of the rare places where I would pretty much say yes to any invitation to revisit at any time.
